Asia Minor
(Anatolia)
Anadolu
The part of Turkey in Asia. The peninsula forms the western extremity of
Asia, between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea; it also borders on the
Aegean Sea. Because of its location at the point where Asia and Europe meet, it
has long been the scene of numerous migrations and conquests. It was the
original location of the Kingdom of Hittites (c. 1950-1200 BC). Later,
Indo-European races, possibly Greeks, established the Phrygian kingdom. In the
6th century BC, Cyrus the Great ruled the area; it was invaded by Alexander the
Great in 334 BC. In the 1st century BC, the Romans began expanding there, and
when the Roman empire was split in AD 395 it fell to the Byzantine empire. The
area endured invasions by Arabs, Turks, Mongols, and the Turkic army of Timur
before Ottoman power was established in the 15th century; its later history to
1920 is that of the Ottoman empire.
